ABOUT US

Meet the People Behind the Process.

Hull Tactical is an independent, privately owned firm focused on quantitative asset management.

Our team brings together decades of trading experience with backgrounds in mathematics, financial engineering, computer science, quantitative research, portfolio management, and market implementation. That mix of disciplines shapes how we research markets, build systematic strategies, and manage HTUS.

Decades in the Markets Led Here.

Hull Tactical grew out of a long history of quantitative trading and market innovation.

Founder and Chairman Blair Hull began building systematic approaches to trading decades before quantitative investing became mainstream. In 1985, he founded Hull Trading Company, where technology and quantitative models were used in listed derivatives market-making across global markets.

After Hull Trading was acquired by Goldman Sachs in 1999, Blair founded Hull Investments. In 2013, he founded Hull Tactical, bringing that experience in quantitative trading into asset management.

HTUS launched in June 2015 as Hull Tactical’s first public investment product.

Research Is Part of the Culture.

Hull Tactical’s research does not stop inside the investment process.

Members of the team publish papers, write books and articles, study market anomalies, and contribute to the broader conversation around quantitative investing, options, market timing, and return predictability.

The goal is the same whether the work becomes a model input, a published paper, or a new research question: test ideas against evidence and keep challenging the assumptions behind them.

Quantitative models can be wrong, relationships can change, and markets can reverse quickly. A tactical strategy may reduce exposure before a market advance, remain exposed during a decline, or otherwise respond differently than intended.

How the Research Reaches the Portfolio.

HTUS evaluates a broad set of quantitative signals, combines them into the Market Sentiment Score, and uses that score to help guide the Fund’s target U.S. equity exposure.

The portfolio team then implements and oversees the Fund in accordance with its governing documents.

The Work Keeps Evolving.

Markets change. Data changes. Relationships that once appeared useful can weaken or disappear.

That makes ongoing research part of the responsibility of running a quantitative investment firm.

Hull Tactical continues to test existing ideas, investigate new ones, and evaluate how its models behave in changing market environments. The objective is not to treat a model as finished, but to maintain a disciplined research process around the strategies the firm manages.
